This was the year when the list of Italian Club activities expanded significantly to include the following:
- A Membership Meeting on February 7, at Vineyard Center, where the Board presented the year’s schedule of events.
- A second general meeting on March 10 at the Cribari Conference Room, followed by a pasta dinner in the Men’s Lounge and a screening of “Swept Away”. Cost was $5 per member.
- A barbecue at Gazebo park on June 9; social hour started at 2 p.m. and dinner was at 3:30. The Club provided chicken, salads, beans and garlic bread. The 55 guests brought antipasti and desserts.
- At The Villages Independence Day celebration, the Club earned $242 at our game booths that were run by Isabel Soares and Lucy Ann Mazur.
- A Board meeting on July 22 at Cribari Conference Room, where it was decided that the Club would donate $1,000 toward the construction of the bocce courts, and also would encourage members to make individual donations on their own. Treasurer Connie Orlando reported that the Club had $3,850 in its checking account (before the bocce donation).
- The golf tournament on September 2.
- Another Membership Meeting on November 20 at Foothill center. A pasta dinner was followed by a showing of the movie “Corky Romano.” Cost was $5 per person.
- A Christmas Party on December 8 at Foothill Center, with a catered prime rib dinner and music by Bill Enders. Price was $20 for Italian Club members and $23 for non-members.
Additional highlights:
- The bocce courts were dedicated on November 12. The Club paid 50 per cent of the expenses of the dedication ($350). More than 250 Villagers attended the dedication, and tournaments and leagues were formed during the first few months of operation.
- The Club produced a special event, open to all Villagers, called “Mozart To Mama,” on October 3 at The Villages Clubhouse. Chaired by Kathy Pavacich, it was a big success, and a very nice dinner catered by the Clubhouse was followed with entertainment by members of Opera San Jose, and by Angelo Butera. We charged $28 per person, and contributed $800 to Opera San Jose. This event gave our Club a good deal of publicity throughout The Villages and attracted even more new members.
