Our first event of the year was a Wine Tasting on January 16 at Vineyard Center. Only those members who had paid their 2005 dues by January 1 were allowed to attend, and about 80 people showed up between 4 and 6 p.m. to enjoy a selection of six Italian varietals, along with some antipasti and biscotti. The party cost a total of about $800, which included the purchase of all the wine consumed, plus several bottles left over for future events, 130 wine glasses for Club use, and some miscellaneous serving pieces.
The Valentine’s Party was held on Saturday, February 12, at Foothill Center. Lorraine and Cappy Cappellieri chaired the event, which attracted about 90 members and guests. A chicken dinner was catered by De Puccio’s, and music was provided by Dick Weberg. Cost was $12 for members and $18 for guests. A Polaroid photo was presented to each couple in attendance, and Kathy Pavacich distributed the blinking lapel pins to everyone. The Club lost money on the event, but a good time was had by all.
Our first membership meeting and dinner of the year was held on April 16. The event was chaired by Bob and MaryAlice Puppo, and 86 members and guests enjoyed a De Puccio catered dinner of antipasti, pasta primavera, and sausages. Kathy Pavacich provided the dessert cakes. The movie “Johnny Stecchino” turned out to be a popular selection. Price was $12 for members and $15 for guests.
Our first off-campus event for members only was a bocce party at Campo di Bocce in Los Gatos on May 19. Bob Puppo was in charge of making all the arrangements, and despite the cool and moist weather, 24 players competed on the indoor and outdoor courts from 10:00 to 11:30, and then enjoyed a buffet lunch. Cost was $28 for the players, and $18 for the one non-player who stayed for lunch. The Club made a few dollars on the event, and the consensus was that we should make this an annual event.
A potluck dinner and bocce party under the direction of Al Harris was held at Gazebo Park on June 25. More than 90 members and guests brought food, and supplemental pasta dishes were provided by De Puccio Catering. Bocce matches under the directions of Bill and Marie Durante and Cappy and Lorraine Cappellieri were the hit of the day. There was no charge for the event, and the Club lost about $200. It was decided afterward that potluck meals are not the best for our Club, and we would dispense with them in the future.
Barbecue and Bocce was held on August 14, and Chairman Myron Zaccheo delivered another outstanding steak barbecue, along with salads and pasta, and provided some surprise antipasti. Bocce was again successfully organized by Bill Durante and Cappy Cappellieri. Members brought antipasti and desserts. Cost was $15 for members and $20 for guests. The Club realized a profit of about $800 on the day.
The Ed Pasquale Golf Classic on September 18 was a resounding success. There were 76 golfers, and more than 100 at the big party at Foothill Center. Chairman Myron ‘Zaccheo arranged for tee times, handled all the golf rules, arranged for the prime rib dinner, and had door prizes for everyone. Golfers paid $25, plus greens fees, arid non-playing dinner guests paid $20.
The annual Opera Night on October 8 at The Clubhouse had a theme of “A Night In Venice”. About 100 attendees enjoyed a fine dinner, with a choice of three entrees. The Trio Amore group was the featured entertainment, and Glenn Weberg provided additional music for dancing. Price was $30 for members and $35 for guests. The Club made a modest profit of less than $300.
The December 10th Christmas Party enjoyed overwhelming success. Chairpersons Lorraine Cappellieri and Marie Durante arranged for a dinner of antipasti, chicken and pasta, salads and desserts. The crowd totaled 102, and we had to turn down several others because of Foothill Center seating capacity. Glenn Weberg provided music for dancing and a lot of singing. Price was $20 for members and $25 for guests.
Our first-ever New Year’s Eve party was held at Foothill Center. About 70 members and guests enjoyed cold finger foods and then an elaborate champagne and dessert bar. A dozen people made it until midnight. Glenn Weberg provided the music, and there was a good deal of dancing and singing. Price was $30 for members and $35 for guests.
We ended the year with more than 180 members. Nick Lickwar, who had been President of the Club since its inception in 2000, announced his retirement at the end of 2005.
